What You Want To Know About Peek Coating

peek coating powder

PEEK coatings are high-performance thermoplastic polymer coatings with excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, and mechanical strength.PEEK coatings are used in a wide range of industries, including medical, aerospace, automotive, electronics, and food processing.

Advantages of PEEK coating

  • Good surface morphology, because PEEK possesses relatively better fluidity of the melt, it was found that the coating surface of PEEK films thus has good flatness.
  • Heat resistance, it can work under 200 ℃ for a very long time, it can work for a short time under 300 ℃, when reaches 400 ℃ it is hard to decompose, and compared with other high-temperature plastics it can work at 50 ℃ higher than most of them; 3, adhesion, generally organic coatings need a primer to stick well with the substrate.
  • Adhesion, as a rule, for the organic coatings priming is required to achieve good adhesion with the substrate, PEEK coatings do not require the use of a primer to achieve high adhesion to the substrate.
  • Characteristics of abrasion resistance, it can well resist the wearing of contacting the object, especially at a temperature above 200 ℃ both high abrasion resistance and low coefficient of friction.
  • High hardness can withstand the pressure that develops through the creep.
  • High density, moderately corrosion resistant, chemical stability is very good, except for concentrated sulfuric acid, the material is extremely insoluble in most solvents.
  • High flame retardancy characteristics.
  • Good insulating properties.
  • Excellent mechanical properties.

PEEK Coating Case Study

  • A PEEK Coating on shoe molds.

BW’s PEEK has been used, at least once, in Taiwan by shoe mold manufacturers in their molds.
As PEEK has properties such as strong adhesion to metal, wear resistance, etc. , the same is the case as with EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) used earlier.
As was adopted and used in the past with EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer) coating, the life of this product was noted to have been extended to 30 times.
has an ageing time 30 times longer than the EVA ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer coating used earlier. Previous to this it was coated with PTEE (polytetrafluoroethylene) but the adhesion was not very strong and it had to be recoated, on average, every day or two.
Previously PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) was also used but it had very poor adhesion characteristics and it had to be re-coated every one or two days on an average.

  • It is applied on sensors of liquid level meters, PEEK Coating.

Sources from Japan also reveal that BW’s coatings have been PEEK Coatings used by a German metering equipment factory in the field of food processing electrostatic capacity-type liquid level meters to detect the insulation coating of the probe. That is, replace the traditional fluorine plastic with PEEK: This can enhance the stability of the measurement results, extending the product life of 20% ~ 50%. PEEK used in electrostatic detection probe of electrostatic volumetric liquid level meter.

  • Cell phone parts are an application of PEEK Coating.

Another Japanese news report mentioned that the BW’s PEEK Coating has been adopted by the
used in cellular phones. Similarly, the display and keypad of such a sliding cell phone are employed in a sliding
The display and keypad of this sort of sliding cell phone are employed in a sliding manner and so does the folding leaf, and it needs to have good sliding features. Earlier a poluimide material was used but there were issues with the strength of material.
However, there were issues of durability. Again, after adopting PEEK coating, the above desired result was realised or attained.
In practical application it has been found that the coating exhibits good scuffing, friction and abrasion properties, heat, adhesion, processability etc. Experiments revealed that even after 200,000 applications, the layer is able to preserve the initial friction; and in the economy can also lower production costs and at the same time conform to the RoHS standards.

Peek Non Stick Coating for Cookware

Currently on the market non-stick coating, mainly PTFE and PFA-based, at present, compared with the PTFE non-stick coating we launched the PEEK non-stick coating has more advantages:

  • Lifespan:

This is, as a general rule, about 8 to 10 years, higher than for PTFE (3-5 years) and PFA (5-8 years). This also means that users don’t have to replace the inner liner so often, decreasing the overall cost of use in the long run.

  • High-temperature resistance:

The second material I decided on is PEEK nonstick coating which can be exposed to temperatures up to 260°C The best part is that this is suitable for cooking in high-temperature cooking environments so this is very suitable for high-temperature cooking. The nonstick coating is abrasion resistant and does not peel off, long-lasting in use, the upper-temperature resistance limits of PTFE and PFA are 250°C and 260°C respectively. Due to this, PEEK is more stable in extreme cooking conditions.

  • Safety:

The PEEK non-stick coating is nontoxic, meets the FDA food grade certification, has chemical resistance (except sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid), PFAS-free(Hazards of PFAS), and will release no harmful at high temps compared with PTFE nonstick coating, in which, once the PTFE temperature exceeds 350 degrees Celsius, the PTFE decomposes, and starts to release mine a minimal amount of hydrofluoric acid vapors but the PEEK doesn't However, PEEK does not. For this reason, PEEK's nonstick coating delivers better food safety assurance.

  • Superior non-stick performance:

PEEK coating has not only a good non-stick effect but also excellent abrasion resistance (hardness and nonstick effect, layer thickness of 30 - 150 µm, scratch resistance up to 270 ° C temperature), easy not to scratch, keep clean surface.

  • Corrosion resistance:

The good resistance of the PEEK non-stick coating to chemicals, achieving lower erosion by detergents and other chemicals used in daily life, can, therefore, increase the service life of cookware.

Matters Needing Attention For PEEK Coating

Pretreatment of PEEK Coating

Drying:The materials must be sufficiently dried, and drying hoppers shall be used during production.
Drying conditions: use an ordinary air-circulation oven and equipment to dry the hopper at a temperature of above 150℃ for 5 hours.

Injection processing conditions

  • During molding at a high temperature, PEEK has high thermal stability and is not sensitive to temperature, shear rate, and high-temper- ture retention time when degrading. Therefore, higher material temperature and higher speed injection can be selected during the processing, and mold temperature control should be uniform.
  • PEEK is a crystalline plastic, so fully crystallized can improve its performance, generally, at a mold temperature of over 160℃.
  • PEEK can be sufficiently crystallized, and even without heat treatment, good molding products can be obtained. If the mold temperature is low or higher requirements are imposed on use performance, it can be handled at a temperature of over 200 ℃ for 1 hour.

Mold and other cautions

  • PEEK has a high viscosity, so the nozzle, the sprue, and the runner should be large to reduce the pressure drop in the flow process. O Molds and equipment shall not have sharp corners, or grooves, and shall ensure a smooth transition at the corners.
  • Mold runners and cavities must be made of abrasion-resistant steel and undergo good heat treatment. The surfaces of cavities and runners must be highly polished.
  • Mold design must have a good exhaust system.
  • Heating systems and heat insulation systems with sufficient efficiency must be provided for mold design and manufacturing to ensure that the temperature of mold can rise above 160℃.
  • Product design should avoid sharp corners, and ensure transition with arc.
