PEEK Anchor

PEEK anchor (Polyetheretherketone anchor ) is a polyetheretherketone material suitable for the repair, reattachment or reconstruction of bone and soft tissue in foot, ankle, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery.

PEEK suture anchors are available in a variety of designs to meet different surgical needs. The Hip Suture Anchor product line includes knotless anchors designed for hip labral refixation and reconstruction, with a non-absorbable PEEK option. Similarly, the PEEK Suture Anchor System is designed to anchor soft tissue to bone in multiple anatomical locations, such as the foot, ankle, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.

PEEK anchors do not degrade as slowly as metal implants, thus avoiding the toxicity, antigenicity or carcinogenicity typically associated with metal implants.
PEEK suture anchors provide stable fixation during shoulder arthroscopy without the complications associated with degraded polymers such as PLA implants.

In terms of the functional scores and the degree of range of motion, no statistical differences were noticed between patients of two groups with using different types of anchors; however, the PEEK anchors revealed higher percentages of bone ingrowth in the comparison with the use of the non-vented biocomposite anchors.
The study also showed more bone ingrowth in the PEEK cylinder filled with open anchor at date 180 and as such, it was more effective than non-vented anchors in accelerating rotator cuff healing in the early stage.
In spite of increased fluid formation at the site of PEEK more than biocomposite anchors, the latter also contributed to the formation of osteolysis.
Qualitative investigations revealed continued functional gains and additional pain alleviation in patients who received PEEK anchors at one year follow-up with subsequent clinical and magnetic resonance imaging examination.
The findings proved that functional score and arc of motion had no substantial difference in either of the anchor types; however the PEEK is more favorable in bone growth than VFB.
Other investigations identified that although biocomposite anchors were prone to create a synergy that led to increased formation of fluid within the systemic region of the body, fluid was also found to form around PEEK anchors as well as the osteolysis.
